Xenoglossia book launch, conversation, screening and presentation

ImageThe University of KwaZulu - Natal Press and the CHR co-hosted a conversation and launch of "Magema Fuze: The Making of a Kholwa Intellectual" a book by Hlonipha Mokoena.

Guest discussant: Khwezi Gule, Chief Curator of the Hector Pieterson Memorial Museum.

This event is part of Xenoglossia, a research project by CHR and will feature archival material and video and photographic presentations by Jakup Ferri, Sanele Manqele and Zanele Muholi.

Hlonipha Mokoena received her Ph.D. from the University of Cape Town in 2005. She is currently an assistant professor of Anthropology at Columbia University in the City of New York. Her book,"Magema Fuze: The Making of a Kholwa Intellectual" is about Magema Magwaza Fuze, the first Zulu-speaker to publish a book in the Zulu language.

Khwezi Gule is a curator based in Johannesburg. He also contributes essays and articles to various publications. In 2010 he was appointed Chief Curator of Hector Pieterson Memorial Museum and Kliptown Open Air Museum, both in Soweto.
